And it%u2019s easy enough to locate and buy. As well as fi sh, there are plenty of other choices of dish to come from the ocean, among them crab.And although it is more widely celebrated in the US, National Crab Meat Day does have a following here in the UK. It falls each year on 9th March and is a day when millions of people around the world celebrate the sweet taste of crab in a variety of recipes.Crab can be boiled, steamed, fried, smoked, grilled, or roasted %u2013 there are many diff erent ways to enjoy this crustacean and the national day is as good as any to have a go and try something new. Crab can be made into patties and crab cakes, included in dips and salads, or used in delicious pasta dishes. The meat also goes well in soups.National Crab Meat Day was started in the 1980s when fans of the food came together to observe a special time to cook and eat it. In the mid1990s the National Crab Council was formed in Virginia, USA, to support sustainable crab fi shing.Like a bit of crab meat? There are many people who do, either in the shell or on one of many tasty dishes. And there%u2019s a special day to celebrate the food.Crab cakes(serves four)Ingredients:1 pound crab meat2 slices white bread, crusts trimmed1 large egg, beaten1 tablespoon seasoning powder1 tablespoon mayonnaise1 teaspoon Dijon mustard1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce2 tablespoons butterMethod:%u2022 Place crab meat in a large bowl, checking for shell pieces%u2022 Break bread into small pieces and add to crab meat. Add beaten egg, seasoning, mayonnaise, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce. Mix by hand to avoid overworking the crab meat and form into 6 patties%u2022 Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat%u2022 Fry patties in hot butter until golden brown, about 4 minutes per side Crab fun facts%u2022 More than 1.5 million tonnes of crab meat is eaten around the world each year%u2022 There are more than 6,700 diff erent species of crab%u2022 Crabs are known as decapods as they have 10 legs%u2022 Not every crab is edible%u2022 Jumbo lump crab meat comes from the creature%u2019s swimming legs%u2022 It%u2019s the most expensive crab meat as it%u2019s hard to come by%u2022 Dark crab meat is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids%u2022 The Japanese Spider Crab can measure up to 13 feet across%u2022 The smallest crabs in the world are Pea Crabs at just half an inch%u2022 Female crabs can release up to 2,000 eggs at one time
