Walk to School Month
Let’s celebrate the bene ts
Eof walking to school
very October, International Walk to School Month sees pupils in more than 40 countries worldwide taking on the challenge and travelling to
school on foot. There are so many advantages to walking, from increasing fitness and reducing the risk of illness, to being more sociable and getting to know your local area better. This worldwide scheme is a great and easy initiative to take part in, so let’s celebrate the bene ts of walking to school.
The fact that exercising is good for you isn’t news to anyone, but many people don’t even think of walking as exercise. Even a light stroll is better for you than just staying still, and walking briskly for a longer amount of time has been proven to have many health bene ts: walking to school is good for bones and muscles and helps kids to grow up big and strong. It also burns calories and builds stamina, helping to look after your body. Not only this, but regular walking has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, stroke and some cancers by lowering blood
Great War Remembrance
Here, we continue to publish the names of the fallen, from our local war memorials, exactly 100 years ago to the month. Having worked with the Royal British Legion, we have the names of the men, alongside their unit and rank, below.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age Shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.
pressure and boosting the immune system. Aside from these physical advantages, walking has also been known to reduce stress and help people suffering with anxiety and depression.
As well as bene ting health, walking can also help you to be more sociable. It’s dif cult not to see people you know on the way to school, and chatting with a friend as you walk can be a great way to prepare for school and unwind at the end of the day. For older children, walking to school without a parent increases independence and helps them get to know their local area better. Also, with the start of the worldwide phenomenon Pokémon GO, the walk to school can be a great opportunity to visit a local Pokéstop and maybe even catch a Rattata or Pidgey en route. Although not everyone lives within walking distance of their school, there are still some changes that you can make to your routine to get involved in this great initiative – if you take a public bus, get off one or two stops before you normally would and walk the rest of the way. Likewise, if you travel to school
by car, ask your lift to drop you further away than normal. Alternatively, if you live too far away to walk but are able to cycle, that can be just as bene cial and is still in the spirit of the scheme. As well as all these other bene ts, reducing the distance you travel by car or bus saves money and is better for the environment.
So remember to take part in International Walk to School Month and get as many people involved as you can. Find out if there are any events happening at your school to celebrate the scheme, or ask if you can organise something yourself. To find out more, visit www.livingstreets.org.uk
