New Building at Olney Surgery
Thanks to
The Friends of Cobbs Garden, the registered charity that works to raise money for the Olney surgery, has just organised a new and
independent specialised consulting room on the surgery site. The building was made possible by the generous donations of local individuals, organisations and businesses and by fund-raising concerts organised by The Friends.
The new consulting room when furnished and equipped cost well in excess of £15,000. It provides much needed treatment space at the already over-crowded Cobbs Garden surgery. It is already in use as extra consulting space which at present is predominantly used by the charity funded counsellor, who specialises in young people’s mental and emotional needs. But it is also proving valuable for other clinical and administrative purposes. The main surgery building was more than suf cient when built in 1992, but with the increasing population of Olney and the removal of services previously provided in the hospital transferring to local GP surgeries, it is now struggling to cope. This extra room is a much needed stop gap until a longer term solution is found. However,
as NHS funding for buildings is currently almost non-existent, this is going to be a real challenge in the years to come.
The Friends of Cobbs Garden Surgery has been raising money in the town since the early 1990s providing equipment and services to the surgery that are no longer made available by the NHS. Recent acquisitions include 24-hour blood pressure monitors and equipment that enables the doctors to treat some conditions at Cobbs Garden that would otherwise necessitate a visit to hospital. The charity funds a Specialist Nurse for the Elderly who tends to the needs of the elderly in Olney and the surrounding villages. This is made possible by a generous regular donation by local accountants, The MPA Group. The Friends also recently sponsored a year-long Dementia awareness campaign in the town, made possible by a donation from a local family. The Friends next fund-raising event will be on Saturday 23rd April at 7.30 in the Olney Centre on the High Street when the Windmill Singers from Bozeat will be giving another of their popular concerts to support the charity.
