All you need to know
Geoff Bacchus
Mead Open Farm, based in Leighton Buzzard, also provided some interesting lambing facts:
● Sheep can give birth to single lambs, twins, triplets and even quadruplets.
● A ewe is usually pregnant for approximately ve months.
● The farmer usually knows roughly when the ewes will start to lamb, as they are only put in the eld with the ram for a short amount of time. One ram will be the father to a whole ock of lambs!
● Male and female lambs both have their tails cut short within a week of being born, using a special rubber ring. This is for hygiene purposes, as they can get a disease called “ y strike” if this is not done.

Our Thoroughly Dis-unitary Authority
The borough’s appalling refusal of clearance for Sainsbury’s proposed store in Olney must surely
raise some serious questions. There is sadly a degree of form attaches to the thinking of Milton Keynes which re ects the view from the other side of the motorway.
I fear there is a long standing link between Milton Keynes town and Tesco. There was a long running controversy over the storage operation at Fenny Lock ..... so long ago that I’ve forgotten the detail but Tesco eventually had their way. Well at least all that was on their side of the M1.
More recently a vast majority of Newport Pagnell’s residents fought against Tesco’s coming to the town. When that argument went to the
borough Milton Keynes supported Tesco on one casting vote.
At that I suggested that Milton Keynes authority should stop at the motorway leaving the older and more rural areas to become North Bucks (and Beds). Now in Olney we are confronted, again by the slenderest margin with a decision running hard against the wishes of a measured 84% of local people.
It is easy to see that Sainsbury’s will compete with the Co-op and with the ever less than welcome Tesco store. I cannot help thinking that, by comparison, Tesco have been very fortunate in their applications. Surely Olney Town Council and Sainsbury’s must demand a judicial review. Maybe, just maybe Milton Keynes can be kicked back where it belongs. GB
