Look carefully at the pictures on this page. These are the winning images in the nal heat of our annual photographic competition. They are excellent examples of pictures that have impact and a fresh view of a subject, as well as being technically excellent. Our
annual competition has four separate competitions throughout the year, and the winning images are chosen by external judges. Points are awarded to each winning picture and the points are added up to give the overall winner for the year. The competitions give our members a chance to have their images assessed by experienced judges, and the judges’ comments give an insight into improving ones’ photographs.

The winning pictures with some of the judge’s comments in the last heat were:
Catching the Light category (Illuminating the Light by Lisa Winson; far right) – the small patch of light on the faces of the two men just lifts that area of the image and balances with the illumination of the stained glass window. Open category (In The Shadow Of Buchaille Etive Mor by Steve Brown; right) – the balance of the composition captures the scale of the scene, and the line of the granite leading away from the cottage balances the image nicely. Trees category (Can’t See the Wood for the Trees by Lisa Winson; right, top) – beautiful soft lighting, with the re ection of the trees in the background providing the perfect backdrop.
