World Book Day
This month the annual celebration World Book Day will be taking place, with children all over the world deciding to reach for a book rather than technology. The day gives
children, with their parents, siblings, relatives and teachers, the chance to celebrate authors, illustrators, books and reading, and the day is now recognised and celebrated in over 100 countries worldwide.
The 3rd March 2016 marks the 19th World Book Day. Children all over the world will come together to appreciate reading and books, and will be encouraged to explore the pleasures and excitement of reading! You could encourage your child to start a reading log, or write a review of their favourite book, or even use some book illustrations as inspiration for their own artwork; there are so many fun possibilities that can arise from reading and enjoying books.
Thanks to the National Book Tokens, various publishers and booksellers, children are also often sent book vouchers on World Book Day. This means they can use their voucher at a participating bookshop to get £1 off any book costing over £2.99. The day is all about getting children closer to reading and making books more accessible, as well as enabling them to discover new books, illustrators and writers – and possibly inspiring them to write their own novel too!
FBeetle Drive
or the February meeting it was decided to hold a Beetle Drive and Social Evening. This always goes down well as it gives everyone a chance to talk to people they might not normally sit with.
After several rounds of gleeful shouts and laughter from those doing well, and groans from those not doing so well, the results were totted up and Martine Coyle was declared the winner. Tea and homemade cakes followed whilst everyone tackled the general knowledge quiz. Some questions were relatively easy, some quite dif cult. One or two seemed familiar from recent newspaper crosswords. (That was lucky!)
Eventually the answers were read out and Miranda and Evelyn were joint winners with 15 correct answers each (not necessarily the same ones!). Yes they were sitting at the same table, and maybe there was the odd bit of discussion over a dif cult question, but hey – everyone had a good time and the cakes were delicious – thank you Gemma.
The raf e was won by Teresa Jones and Miranda Allum. Newport Pagnell Women’s Institute meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the café at the rear of the Methodist Church. In March we will hear about Paul Heley’s Adventures on a Motorbike. New members are always welcome. For further information please call Evelyn Mison on 01908 615630 or just turn up on the night.
