Readers’ Letters
Looking Back
In 2011 The Chronicle & Echo printed a photo, in the Looking Back section of their newspaper, of one of the Olney Pancake Races and asked readers if they recognised any of the participants.
Joan Parkin replied to the request with some information she knew about that
race and she thought it would be nice to share it with Phonebox Readers:
“I recognise a friend of mine as the winner of the Olney Pancake Race, running, receiving a kiss from the verger, and tossing the pancake.
He name was Bridget Lowrie, daughter of a well known Olney family – parents Lilian and Jack Adams.
This was the race in 1959 and I also took part, having been encouraged by my Father, who on a recent trip to New York on the Queen Elizabeth, shared a table with two people from Liberal, Kansas and discovered not only had they farming in common, they also had the competitive Olney Pancake Race. My Father, anxious to send them paper cuttings of the forthcoming race, persuaded me to run. I think I came fth – rst of the married women taking part, but could not beat my athletic friend.
My Father is the gentleman on the extreme left in picture two – Stanley Pibworth. The verger giving the kiss was Cyril Parker.
I hope this information may be of interest and pleased the race is continuing and keeping up this tradition.”
Joan Parkin
[The result for that particular race in 1959 was a win for Olney: Olney’s Bridget Lowrie, in a time of 1.15.8; with Liberal’s Mary Collingwood, timed at 1.8.0.]
Church Hall Thanks
Dear Editor, I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to all who kindly and generously helped recently following the break in at the Church Hall. Within 8 hours of discovery the mess and damage, interim repairs were completed by volunteers, which allowed the hall to resume its normal role as part of the town’s community hub the following day.
Many of your readers will be aware that when we began fund raising and speaking with different groups in the town our vision and hope for the hall once refurbished, was that it would be a hub of support to our town. When it opened just over 3 years ago little did we realise how popular it would become. The hall is now home to many different community groups including a Memory Club, Popup Café run by and training young people, youth groups, nursery, dance groups, exercise groups, study groups, family events, breakfast and dinner events.
So thank you again for all your encouragement and messages, they transformed this dif cult situation and revealed again how much care and love there is within Olney and the surrounding community. God bless you all, Claire Wood, Rector Olney Parish.
