A Gorgeous Georgian Day
Adorned with wigs, breeches, waistcoats and grand dresses,
we had a wonderful ‘Georgian Tea Party’ at the Cowper and Newton Museum in Olney on Saturday 30th August. Barbara Segal and her dance group came from Islington to teach us some simple dance steps so that all our visitors could join in with live pipe and tabor music. We had costumes for everyone who wanted to dress up, thanks to the sewing efforts of my marvellous volunteer ‘Costume Creators’ (if you would like to join this wonderful team of volunteer needle-workers do contact me). The Friends of the Museum very kindly purchased some ex-theatre/ TV costumes for us to keep
for these special occasions too. Our thanks go to the new owners of ‘Teapots of Olney’ for continuing the tradition of supporting this event with delicious cakes. Every year our ‘Georgian Day’ gets better as we study the period to bring it to life for our community – thank you to everyone involved – it’s a true team effort. We will let you know the date for next year’s big day. In the meantime, a short video of the event is available to watch on the monitor in our reception area, along with other videos by Tony Lamming and David Harding, highlighting all that goes on and that can be seen in this much-loved 18th century community museum and gardens. Come and visit us soon – a warm welcome awaits you!
Physiotherapy for Strains and Sprains
Hello, I am Eileen Lewis, I have a BSc in Physiotherapy and also am a qualified Acupuncturist with over 20 years experience. In this months edition with the Football and Rugby season well under way I am going to discuss acute soft tissue injuries and how Physiotherapy may help to facilitate recovery.
An acute soft tissue injury occurs suddenly, whilst doing an everyday task or during sport. It may result in damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves or connective tissue and even bone. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, bruising, loss of movement and perhaps an inability to put weight onto the affected area. Common injuries are, for example, knee or ankle sprains, pulling a muscle such as the hamstrings or calf, deep bruising to the thigh muscle (quadriceps), and shoulder or wrist sprains.
The important thing within the first 24-48 hours is to follow the RICE method; Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This will often help facilitate recovery and allow the body to start to heal itself. Physiotherapy can be helpful in reaching a diagnosis, giving a prognosis and speeding up rehabilitation and return to everyday activities or sport. Acute injuries can become chronic if not managed correctly in the early stages. Treatments such as soft tissue work, massage, mobilisations and ultrasound or acupuncture can be useful. Advice and exercises to reduce stiffness and improve strength and balance will also be of benefit.
So if you have had a strain or sprain and its still troubling you please give me a call on 01234 881 400 have a look at my website or email me eileen@bedfordphysio.co.uk. I look forward to helping you.
