Lavendon Village Show
The hundreds of exhibits had been judged, the refreshments were ready and even before the official opening time of 2.30, visitors were
streaming into the village hall, eager to look at what was on display or to see if they had won first, second or third in their class. If they were amongst the prize winners, they were proud to tell those around them; if they weren’t, it was a case of “....it’s not really about winning, it’s about supporting the Show.”
The Show had been widely publicised in Phonebox, in the Parish Newsletter, on the village website and even Facebook had got into the action. In addition, posters had been stuck up around the village and in the week leading up to the Show, scarecrows had been on display in various locations, waiting patiently to be taken to the school field on the Saturday, to be judged. The judges were Councillor Peter Geary and Debbie Brock and they gave the children’s prize to the Lavendon School entry, two characters from the Disney film “Despicable Me” and the adult prize to Chris Stickells, for her demure-looking, off-duty milkmaid.
The standard was again high and the judges praised the exhibitors for their ingenuity and originality.
The hall was full of mums, dads, grandparents, friends, relatives and others and as well as inspecting the exhibits – vegetables, fruit, flowers, jams, chutneys, cakes, bread and handicrafts and the children’s efforts in the poetry, cooking, model-making and various other classes - they tried their luck on the tombola and the raffle, the Tusting bag competition, as they enjoyed the drinks and refreshments, prepared and served by smiling ladies from the village. One exhibitor brought two huge melons, about a quarter the size of a wheelybin, which had to be transported on a trolley.
There were 15 trophies to be won and these were presented by Mrs Kath Collins, Chair of the Show Committee. John Shann won three of these with his chrysanthemums, onions and best vegetables overall in the Division. Tricia Hedges won the Kitchener Shield for best dahlias, Florence Welsh won the Ruth Clarke Memorial Cup for cookery and Ruth Welsh won the Grace Stapleton Memorial
