Newport Pagnell
Inmid September, a small group of ladies made the two-hour bus trip to Cambridge, where they spent a pleasant day wandering around the city.
They visited St. Johns College and walked through the
gardens, then over the Bridge of Sighs to wander along the riverbank. After lunch in a restaurant overlooking the rooftops, they listened to a choir in one of the many churches, before making their way home again having had a good day out.
Our AGM was held in October and the Annual Report reminded us of just how many interesting talks and activities we had during the previous year. Our finances were in good order, and two new people were appointed to the Committee to replace two long-serving members who were standing down. Both ladies were thanked for their sterling service, and presented with lovely bouquets.
The winner of the Competition Cup this year was Barbara Hilton. After the official business was completed we were entertained by John Goodwin, a magician, who told us the History of Mystery.
The oldest known magic trick – cups and balls – apparently originated 5,000 years ago! The first English book of magic, entitled The Discovery of Witchcraft, was printed in 1584 but King James I ordered it to be publicly destroyed.
It was common for magicians to perform in the street, usually at markets, until some time during the 18th century, when the theatre became their venue. Since then, of course, we have all seen them on TV. We heard about many famous magicians and illusionists, including Houdini, David Nixon, Paul Daniels, and David Copperfield, and all the time John Goodwin was performing tricks in front of us. Just when we thought we had worked out how it was done, he confounded us all by proving we were wrong! A truly great evening and lots of fun.
The raffle this month was won by Evelyn Mison and Julie Allen. Competition winners were Marion Stapleton, Angela Hancox and Jane Jones.
Newport Pagnell Women’s Institute meets on the second Tuesday of each month at 7.30pm in the Royal British Legion Club, and is always delighted to welcome new members. Our next meeting is on 12th November when Mike Bartlett will be talking about The Amber Room. For further information please call Evelyn Mison on 01908 615630 or just turn up on the night.
