Newport Pagnell Football
ANewport Pagnell Town squad depleted by several players leaving the club in the summer and then
suffering a series of injuries is still finding it difficult to gain league points. As of mid-October they are down in 18th place in the United Counties League Premier Division with only 5 points from 10 matches. After their win over Wellingborough on 17th September they lost their next four league matches. Despite playing some good football at times Newport have found it difficult to score goals, with only one goal in those four defeats.
Two of the defeats have been against teams in the top three of the league. Newport played some good football in the 3-0 defeat against a very good Spalding United team, but Spalding’s solidity in defence and sharpness in front of goal showed why they are top of the league with a 100 percent record and only one goal conceded after 10 matches. The one positive result was a midweek win over Desborough in the first round of the United Counties League Cup. With scores level at 1-1 after 90 minutes and no more goals in extra time, the match was decided on penalties, providing some late night excitement at Willen Road. After Newport had missed their first two penalties and Desborough had gone two ahead things looked bad for the home team, but Newport snatched an unlikely victory as
they scored their remaining three penalties while Desborough missed the target with two of theirs and saw their fifth saved.
There are three home United Counties League matches scheduled for November, against Northampton Sileby Rangers (Saturday 2nd), second-placed Deeping Rangers (Saturday 16th) and Peterborough Northern Star (Saturday 23rd), all 3pm kick-off.
The Reserves have made a better start to the season. After their first four matches they are the only unbeaten team in the Northern Division of the Suburban League. With one win and three draws they are only in sixth place, but with two or three matches in hand on all the teams above them. Their only defeats have been in the two legs of a Suburban League Cup tie against a Corinthians team that had a 100 per cent record in the Southern Division of the league. (Photos are from the Reserves home leg against Corinthians.)
