Didn’t we have a fair Autumn?
The place to be last month was the United Reformed Church in Newport Pagnell when our first ever Autumnal Food and Drink Fair took place.
It was a case of food galore when a number of local suppliers set up stall and traded their wares to our well-attended event. Creativity was the name of the game and that was nothing to do with the produce which was being sold. Amongst those taking part were Happily Baking, Anjon Chillies, Virtual Cider, Atelier the Brigadeiro, Cupalicious, Caramba Oils, Deli Vegeteria, Jammy Cow and Amazing Grains - phew that was a hard bit of typing.
Our next Newport Pagnell event will be on 14th December, again at the United Reformed Church when “A Last Minute Christmas Fair” will let you get these final additions to your present list just in time for the big day.
How about giving us a couple of hours?
We have a number of events coming up over the next few months which will be stretching our resources to breaking point.
Olney Fireworks, Dickens of a Christmas and Newport Pagnell Christmas Lights switch-on sees our members active in supporting the community. Full details of what we are up to are contained in our website so please have a look at what we are doing and if you are able to give us an hour or so of your time. Use our contact page and one of our members will get back to you to slot you into our programme. Remember - two hours is not a lot but means a lot to us.
About Olney Calendar
Our Calendar is back, but this time it’s quite different.
Having listened to your feedback from our previous two issues, we have reduced the size, making it much cheaper to post, changed from car based art to fantastic photos from the surrounding area and contrary to the normal trend, have cut the price in half.
Our 2014 issue is a more practical A4 size and has 12 fantastic photos from the collection of local photographer Dan Evans. These depict a wide range of images from the Olney area including both scenes and the flora and fauna which the area is famous for. The calendar is supplied fully shrink wrapped and has it’s own postage envelope enclosed making
it much more convenient for sending to friends and family at home and overseas. We are delighted to be able to show our power companies how to increase sales as we have cut the price of the calendar in half – now only £5 each.
These are available from a number of outlets in the town and via our stall in the market place. For full details, see our website and to order your copy, either visit us on one of our market days or email.
Malt at the Movies
Malt Masterchef is now a distant memory and from the feedback of those who attended, it seemed to be an event which they not only enjoyed but found the experience quite enlightening. A number who came along ‘out of curiosity’ were won over to the concept of whisky pairing – even although they initially considered themselves to be a bit ‘anti whisky’.
The food was wonderful, the selected whiskies excellent and the speaker – well, I’ll leave the grapevine to pass on the comments about the host. Stepping in at the last minute when Bill found himself on the wrong side of a medical emergency was a bit fraught, however I hope I did not do too badly and those attending found the evening sufficiently interesting.
Time now to prepare for event #4 – Malt at the Movies @ The Carlton Club on 14th March 2014.
Our tasting will be based around the award winning film by producer Ken Loach. This film is a general release title which tended to be shown in cinemas in Scotland, Canada, Australasia and places with a high level of Scots population so whilst I suspect most of you will be unaware of it, I am sure you will find it hugely funny, often emotional but truly entertaining. The story centres around Robbie, a likeable young hooligan who wants to break away from a life of crime and live a ‘normal’ life with his girlfriend and new born baby. With the aid of his newly acquired knowledge and interest in Malt Whisky and his awareness of “The Angel’s Share” he sees a golden opportunity to make a few quid – but all is not plain sailing. This is NOT a film about whisky but rather a film in which Whisky provided the theme so it will be suitable for all (subject to the 18 film classification).
It also gives us a chance to possibly create a World First as we will be joining Robbie
and his mates on their travels around the Whisky world, enjoying the same drinks as they do and learning along with them. I do have to draw the line at the £1m whisky though, as the Lions are not willing to underwrite that element.
Tickets for the film will be free and open to everyone (within the 18 film classification) with the tasting being a separate ticketed event. The price for this element is still to be confirmed but I am aiming to keep it as close to the ‘normal’ tasting price of £20 if at all possible. More details much nearer the time.
Have a look at the film trailer on www. youtube.com/watch?v=NcQIvmR21VU and if you like what you see, make sure you keep the date free if you want to come along.
And Finally
How do you get help from the Lions club?
Do you know of an organisation, charity or someone who could benefit from support from the Lions Club? How do you go about asking us if we can help out? Not sure if we can assist? If you are on the web, the simplest way to find out is to visit our website www.npolneylions.btck.co.uk and go to our “Contact Us” page. Alternatively, email our Service Committee Chairman at tonyhiggs.higgs@btinternet.com and give us an outline of what you would like us to consider. No computer? Then simply phone Lion John Ferris on 01234 712217 to start the ball rolling.
