IT'S A NEW ROTARY YEAR AT NEWPORT PAGNELL July 1st heralded the start of the fiftieth year of the Rotary Club of Newport Pagnell. Founded in 1963, 2013 will be a year of celebration and a continuation of serving the local, national and international communities. One of the first events was the induction of the new president, Nigel Benson, which was carried out by outgoing President, Richard Coleman. Nigel is married to Carole, with two children and an excitable and affectionate canine pet. Originally from Cheshire, Nigel is now an established Newportonian. Ambitious plans for this Rotary year include the usual Frosts Garden Centre and Olney and Newport Pagnell street collections, Jaipur Charity Dinner, Christmas trees for local schools, Young Musician Competition, Schools Technology Tournament, help with financing a Sensory Garden at Cedars School - to name but a few of our anticipated projects. RY CLUB W NEWPORT PAGNELL WELCOME TO NEW MEMBERS As reported briefly in the July Phonebox, we are delighted to welcome two new members to Newport Pagnell Rotary Club, Wendy Egan and Derek Barker. Wendy is a well-known figure in Newport Pagnell, a long-term resident of the town, a councillor for some seven years and having just stepped down after a two year stint as Mayor. As a Rotarian, Wendy hopes to continue making a positive contribution to the community and fund-raising. When not involved in community activities you may well find her with her grandchildren or out dog-walking. walking, visiting National Trust properties and gardens, and attending musical concerts. He looks forward to playing a full part in the various community activities of Rotary He will be relinquishing his bachelor status when he marries Jeanie in September. Derek Barker is a fuII -time solicitor with Lowe and Co of Marston Moretaine, specialising in Wills, Probate and Trusts. He was born in Bedford and, after university and training outside the area, joined the small Newport Pagnell firm of Bull Astley & Harding in 1990, which many local people would remember. Derek lives in Newport Pagnell and, in his spare time enjoys hill- Another welcome addition to our membership is Roger Simmons. A Rotarian for a number of years, Roger is transferring from the Rotary Club of Aylesbury due to a change in their meeting day/time. This will increase our membership to a more healthy25.
