'You've been to that charity shop again, haven't you?' George's wife said accusingly.
George thought it best to come clean. 'Well, yes, I have, Anne,' he admitted, sheepishly. 'But look what I've found.' He was parading proudly around the room in a pair of rather obviously second-hand jeans that fitted his short legs and podgy thighs perfectly, and slotted neatly under his overhanging middle-aged belly.
Anne was unconvinced. 'But they're old and scruffy.' 'Distressed, they call it - that's the fashion these days.' Charity shops had been a bone of contention all their married life. 'They're dirty and smelly - full of other people's rubbish.'
George loved a bargain and saw charity shops as an Aladdin's cave. 'You never know what you might find.' He would browse for hours and try to sneak items into the house.
Anne liked eve thing neat, tidy and modern. She wouldn't be seen dead in an outfit that wasn't brand new. George preferred old furniture, second-hand books, and what he called 'comfortable' clothing. They compromised. Anne allowed him to fill the spare room - his 'study' - with his dusty old books, LPs, pictures, and collections of other people's discarded nick-nacks. The rest of the house was pristine, shiny, and new.
The only time Anne would visit a charity shop would be to deposit any unwanted items, including any of George's purchases she disapproved of. 'Look - these Jeans fit like a glove.' Anne sighed. 'Of course they fit, George. They're yourjeans-Itookthemtothecharityshoplastweek.'
