In our busy day to day lives it is easy to forget that our Armed Forces are overseas fighting a war in hostile conditions. They are watching over checkpoints, disposing of bombs, ensuring that elections are free and fair for all and they do all of this without asking for anything in return. This is why Armed Forces Day is so important for us to show our gratitude to our Forces and their families.
It is easy to see just a soldier fighting for our freedoms and those of others, but behind every soldier is their family. When the soldier is on operations overseas their families are fighting it with them, never knowing whether they are safe and well and dreading the day that they should get a knock at the door late at night.
For me as a TA soldier, Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for us all to show our support for the Forces community and their families. It is also an opportunity to raise the public awareness of the Armed Forces. This year Olney showed its support for past and present Forces and really got into the spirit of the day. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting our Veterans and hearing their stories as well as sharing my own experiences of Afghanistan. Even though it’s only one day that is all it takes to show our gratitude and boost morale for our troops.
