Shaken not Stirred
The Martini is a mixture of gin and dry vermouth usually
garnished with an olive or a twist of lemon. It’s solid, strong, and
dependable. It will get you through any crisis, and can abseil down a
building and into an Aston Martin at the first sign of trouble – oh no, that’s James Bond. If you spend all
day saving lives or negotiating
huge deals then this is the drink
for you.
75ml gin
15ml dry vermouth
1 green olive or a twist of
lemon peel 6 ice cubes
Oh so sophisticated . . . ....sipping cocktails in the Swan
Never miss an opportunity to dress up me, and never ever miss an opportunity to NOT feel guilty about spending £5 a time on a champagne brandy cocktail. So I was first in the queue at the Swan Inn & Bistro’s first ever Cocktail Night on the 10th February. The night was hosted to support a group of local women raise money for Maternity World Wide. Seven cocktails were on offer and the Swan had promised to donate the whole £5 price tag on one – the champagne, brandy and
cranberry ‘Worldwide Whizzler’. My aim was to taste each of the seven cocktails on offer and review each one here – but, well I do like a bit of champagne and brandy – and did I mention it was for charity? It did get me thinking though....can you judge a person by their cocktail choice?

Lisa, Nicki & Sally are now on their bike ride around Ethiopa! £321 was donated in total from the Cocktail evening - Good luck to you all!

The Champagne Sophisticate
The classic champagne cocktail, like it’s drinker oozes understated elegance, shuns any decoration, and has a sparkling personality with hidden depths. The version of this I used to drink when it wasn’t quite legal for me to do so – brandy and babycham – made me think I was grown up and elegant, subsequently act the opposite and was a
fairly safe investment for the boyfriend. Nothing much has changed really!
1 white sugar cube
2 dashes bitters 20ml cognac champagne to fill the glass
Let’s have another
Accessorised to the hilt, and a little bit out of date, the Pina Colada is a sickly sweet coconut rum concoction drunk by someone who seriously knows how to enjoy themselves and really doesn’t care what anyone else thinks. With no inhibitions and full of energy
they’ll be first on the dance floor,
and first with the karaoke and as
best friends go, you can’t beat
them.
50ml white rum 200ml pineapple juice 25ml cream 25ml coconut cream
Hearty and
Healthy
By the time this drinker gets to the pub at 10am she will already have walked the dogs, fed the chickens, given the vicar what for and prepared Sunday dinner for 12. The Bloody Mary is a robust and no-
nonsense mix of vodka and tomato juice with a bit of spice and I for one wouldn’t argue with its drinker!
2 ice cubes double shot of vodka half a lemon juice
6 dashes worcester sauce 3 dashes tabasco sauce 150ml tomato juice salt and pepper
celery garnish
