News from Sherington Pre-school
Firstly, thank you to all who attended our successful Open Morning on 31st January. This event provided prospective children and their parents, carers or guardians a chance to see the Pre-school in action. Places at our small, village Pre-school are limited so should you wish to register your child please use the contact details below and don’t hesitate to get in touch.
At the end of January we celebrated Chinese New Year. The children explored the sounds of different musical instruments whilst others had great fun dancing and moving around the village hall whilst pretending to be a dragon.
The snow in early February provided the children with a new adventure. We built a brilliant snowman and took turns to slide down a slope in the play area on our makeshift sledge! The children were dressed in special full bodysuits to keep them warm and dry as they played. Once back indoors, we made and served hot chocolate and fresh soup at our snack bar. The children particularly enjoyed chopping up the vegetables and helping to make a hearty, healthy soup.
The children have just finished an interesting and stimulating theme on colours. They have explored what happens when colours are mixed together and this led to some of children painting beautiful rainbow pictures. To reinforce this theme we shared the book, 'Elmer in the Snow'. The children extended their learning by making a large Elmer the elephant from card and using lots of coloured squares to decorate his body.
On Friday 3rd February there was great excitement at Pre-school when we were paid a
special visit by Matt Jarvis, one of the DJs from Heart Radio. Matt came along to read us a special book called, 'The Little Boy Who Lost His Laugh' as part of Heart’s commitment to promote the ECAT (Every Child A Talker) project. The story was about a little boy called Sam who woke up one morning with the feeling that there was something missing. It is of particular relevance as it contains references to places in Milton Keynes such as Campbell Park where Sam goes to fly a kite with his Dad marking the start of his adventure. Matt very kindly gave out copies of the book to all the children.
After the half-term break we are most pleased to welcome Brodie and Isabelle and look forward to getting to know them as we embark upon our next theme about Technology. As we explore this theme with the children, they will have ample opportunity to use the wide variety of relevant equipment we have within the Pre-school. This will enable them to develop skills on the laptop, digital cameras, video cameras as well as programmable and remote control toys.
It is worth noting here that all our themes focus on and develop elements from the EYFS (Early Years Foundation Stage). As each child progresses, their learning is monitored and noted in their individual records. This enables us to record the learning journey of each of our children from the day they start at Pre-school until the time when they leave us, well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
Finally, another quick reminder about our hugely popular, 'Mad March Hare Affair' on the 24th March. This event will be held in Sherington Village Hall (10:30am-2:30pm) and proceeds from entrance and refreshments will be used to support Pre-school activities. There will be stalls
to browse, refreshments to enjoy and lots of activities for families and children – something for everyone! Please come along and show your support - look out for details on posters nearer the time, watch our website updates or contact one of the staff or committee.
In the meantime, to find out more about joining the fun and learning at Sherington Pre-school please do take a look at our website at www.sherington.org.uk/preschool telephone Jo Tough on 617685 (07866 409 169) or call in to Sherington Village Hall, Church Road, Sherington any morning Monday to Thursday between 9.15 and 12.15.
