OLNEy-NEWTON LINk
Were you there on february 3rd?
If you were you will know that there was a Barn Dance and Hog Roast, that it was a VERY cold night and over 100 people kept warm by dancing to the music of local band Winnie and the Whirly Pits. Two unfortunate chefs had to endure freezing temperatures outside the Rugby Club in order to cook our Hog Roast but we did thank them kindly for their efforts by eating all their food. AND we made a profit of £540 so thank you to all who came along. If you don’t see yourself on this photograph take a look on our web-site or Facebook page! Where is the money going?
The Skills Training Centre is in business and there are three IT tutors teaching local people how to use computers. We are helping out with salaries for a few months until they can become self-sufficient. The monthly salary for each tutor is 350,000 Leones or approx. £58.
We are also aiming to install Solar Panels at the Newton Health Centre and needed to raise £5000 to do this. Solar panels will provide better lighting for night births and refrigeration for drugs which are gradually becoming more readily available to local health workers. We have so far raised £4000 so are well on the way to achieving this goal. The beady eyed among us will have seen a display of photographs of the Newton Health Centre at Cobbs Garden Surgery. Your Support is very much appreciated!
RAISING MONEY FOR PROSTATE CANCER
March is Prostate Cancer Awareness month so it seems like a good opportunity to highlight this devastating illness – the most common male cancer – which affects almost 10 per cent of all men aged 50 and kills 10,000 men in the UK every year.
After losing my father to the disease in 2009 (he was only 63), I set out to raise £2000 for the Prostate Cancer Charity, asking friends and family to support me in a quest to lose weight and get fit whilst raising money and awareness for the charity. The support so far has been amazing – and as I write this in mid-February I'm on target to reach my goal of losing just over three stone (without any "faddy diets" - just lots of running, cycling, spinning, swimming and sensible eating) and running three races of 10km or above before my 40th birthday in April (not bad for someone who was approaching 18 stone, and couldn't run to the end of the street a couple of years ago).
If you'd like to help support this important cause and are able to sponsor me – I'll be running the Milton Keynes 10K on 4th March and would very much appreciate your sponsorship. You can find out more and donate at www.justgiving.com/fitat40 or, if you'd prefer to donate offline, you could write a cheque to "The Prostate Cancer Charity" and contact me via the Phonebox.
