WHAT’S A NICE JEWISH GIRL AND A NIGERIAN DOING IN A CHURCH LIKE THIS?
Olney Parish Church will be playing host to a unique evening of music, history and laughter on Saturday 10th March 2012 at 7.30pm. The double-bill features two contrasting acts, two journeys, several songs a range of political threads.
Nigerian-born and Liverpool-based writer, actor and singer Tayo Aluko will be presenting ‘From Black Africa To The White House’: a talk about Black History and Black Political Resistance, with Spirituals sung live to piano accompaniment. Tayo is a baritone and has sung in concert halls across the world as well as performing lead roles in operas and musicals such as Nabucco, Kiss Me Kate and Anything Goes. Tayo is also the writer, performer and producer of ‘Call Mr Robeson’ which won Artistic Excellence and Best Male Performer Awards at the 2008 Brighton Festival Fringe, and Merit Awards for Excellence in London in 2010. Attracted to Olney by the story of John Newton’s activism to end the slave trade, Tayo will be coming to the town after performances of his play in Jamaica and New York’s Carnegie Hall.
There are a few touches of humour in Tayo’s otherwise serious and illuminating presentation, but the evening will be rounded off with pure comedy from writer and performer Naomi Paul. Surreal, truthful and compelling, Naomi presents a distinctive take on our times in ‘Reshape While Damp’. At times poignant, always funny, Naomi wonders what to do with the man on the doorstep, how to get out more, and what a nice Jewish girl like her is doing in a place like this. With her deadpan style, Naomi has been
delighting audiences at cabaret/comedy and spoken word events throughout Britain. She’s performed at the Henley and Edinburgh Fringe Festivals and will be coming to Olney shortly after performing at Dave’s Leicester Comedy Festival.
The event will bring a real taste of the Fringe to Olney and is suitable for ages 14+. It’s presented jointly by Tayo Aluko & Friends and the Olney-based charity Advantage Africa. Tickets are priced at £10 and £7.50 for concessions and are available on www.shopadvantageafrica.org, by calling 01234 711005 or from Advantage Africa’s office above Taylor’s Estate Agents in Olney Market Place.
The evening’s proceeds will go towards Advantage Africa’s work with people affected by poverty, dis- ability and HIV. Their Director Andrew Betts says: ‘We work with some of the most excluded children and adults in East Africa. Our projects support local people, ideas and inspiration to promote lasting change and create real hope for the future’.
