OLNEY-NEWTON LINK
Schools in Harmony
Four local schools, Lavendon, Olney Infant Academy, Olney Middle and Ousedale, joined together on Thursday 10th November to put on a musical extravaganza in aid of their partner schools in Newton, Sierra Leone.
Each school had chosen two items to perform. There was some African drumming, Samba and beautiful singing from the school choirs. For the grand finale the schools came together and sang ‘ A Keelie’ an African call and response song from Ghana.
It was fantastic to see all four schools singing together on the stage. Adults and children had all worked hard to make this an enjoyable event. Hopefully this can be
repeated in the future.
A generous collection raised £265, which will be divided equally between the four partner schools in Newton. - Marilyn Watkins.
Christmas Card Alternative
After the delight of hearing about the Skills Training Centre opening our thoughts now turn to the running and supporting of the vital work being done in the centre. The aim is for it to become self-financing but initially it will need a bit of help.
So far over 90 students have signed up for a course in computer science and 4 tutors are employed at a cost to the students of about £7 for a 6 week course. We need to support these people so that the population of Newton can gain skills to help them gain
employment.
So how can you
help? If you, like
so many of us,
wonder if
Christmas gifts or
money often
spent on
Christmas cards could be put to better use why not help us to support the students as they strive to pull themselves away from poverty? Or help us pay the tutors who are supporting these people by teaching them skills that our children pick up in primary school? We are also helping pay for fuel so the computers can run, as well as sending basic office equipment such as paper and printer ink.
If you would like to help us run this invaluable resource then please contact us by phoning 01234 711751/ 01234 712919 or by email to blintern@aol.com. We will supply you with a Gift Card to acknowledge your donation - Claire Lintern, Secretary of the Olney Newton Link
AND AFTER CHRISTMAS!!
A date for your diary to keep you going.

Physiotherapy for Knee Pain
Hello, I am Eileen Lewis, I have a BSc in Physiotherapy and also am a qualified Acupuncturist with over 20 years experience. In this months edition I would like to discuss Knee Pain, the causes and symptoms and how physiotherapy can help.
The knee contains two joints, namely, the tibiofemoral joint (the main part of the knee) and the patellofemoral joint (the kneecap). There are several ligaments at the knee joint, which ensure good stability, the main ones are: the Medial Collateral Ligament (on the inside), the Lateral Collateral Ligament (on the outside) and the Posterior and Anterior Cruciate Ligaments (which lie internally). There are also many other structures including the bones, menisci (or cartilage), fat pad, bursa and of course the muscles.
If any of these structures become damaged they can cause pain, swelling, bruising or stiffness in and around the knee joint. Symptoms may be of sudden onset after an injury or trauma, or of slow gradual onset as a result of several different causes. A few you may have heard of are, joint degeneration (Osteoarthritis), tendinopathy and bursitis (Housemaids Knee). There are many more, too many to mention in this short article. Physiotherapy can help to diagnose the root cause of the knee pain and treatment then may include advice, exercises to improve movement and strength, mobilisations, taping, ultrasound or acupuncture.
So, if you are suffering with an acute or chronic knee problem and need help to get you back to sport or your everyday normal activities please give me a call, on 01234 881400 or 07717 004361, have a look at my website or email me eileen@bedfordphysio.co.uk.
I look forward to helping you.
