Well it’s September, and first off let’s hope all the young people out there got the results they hoped for, as I am writing
this on the day of the results. Whatever they were though you can now relax back and just enjoy yourself for the rest of the summer - you probably deserve it.
If you're a music or food lover there is plenty on offer, from the Big Olney Food Festival to Adam Ant, who’s on in Bedford and we have two tickets to give away for the gig..... Just answer a simple question and send it to us or email it to our new website which is featured inside and you could win! It’s all in the magazine. So much to do so no need to think of Christmas just yet.....
Keep sending us all your articles, notices, pictures, events and letters; it’s you that makes this magazine the best local magazine in the country (unless you know better!)

Dear Editor
Raising Awareness of Horse Riders
There have been three recent incidents on the B526
Northampton Road leading from the bottom of Newport
Pagnell High Street to the turning to New Woad Farm, Lathbury, involving horse riders, cars, tractors and other vehicles driving at speed, too close, sounding car horn and giving verbal abuse. This resulted in startled horse and rider, plus cuts and lacerations to the horses legs. The injuries to horse, rider and end result for the driver and vehicle involved could have been far worse.
We are writing to send a strong message to all drivers to please show consideration for both horse and rider and to raise awareness of speed along this road.
Extract from Highway Code (Road users requiring extra care) “When passing animals, drive slowly give them plenty of room and be ready to stop. Do not scare animals by sounding your horn, revving your engine or accelerating rapidly once you have passed them. Look out for animals being led, driven or ridden on the road and take extra care. Keep your speed down at bends and on narrow country roads.”
“Be particularly careful of horse riders, especially when overtaking. Always pass wide and slowly. Horse riders are often children, so take care and remember riders may ride in double file when escorting a young or inexperienced horse or rider. Look out for horse riders’ and signals and heed a request to slow down or stop. Take great care and treat all horses as a potential hazard; they can be unpredictable, despite the efforts of their rider/driver.”
Speed limit on this stretch of road is 40 in Lathbury, slowing down to 30 just before the bridge and 20 mph in the High Street. Often cars and bikes exceed this speed limit and this raises concern.
Riders have to use the main road to reach bridle ways and working mothers exercise horses when they can and this may clash with busy times of the day. We are pleading on behalf of horse, rider, cyclist and pedestrian to show due care and attention when using this stretch of road. Vehicles travelling too close and too fast can ‘spook’ horses into unpredictable behaviour. We write asking for consideration before a major accident occurs.
