Do your bit to help Newport Pagnell look blooming wonderful!
that’S thE MESSagE from the town’s Mayor Wendy Egan who is urging local residents to get behind the bid to do well in the 2011 royal horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom competition.
the newport Pagnell Partnership and the town Council have entered the town in the competition, with thames & Chilterns in Bloom judges descending on Monday July 18.
Mrs Egan said: “We entered last year for the first time and did really well, achieving a silver medal. this year we want to go one better and go for gold. Many residents have brilliant front gardens and we have some fantastic green spaces for everyone to enjoy such as Bury Field, ousebank gardens and Castle Meadow.”
already lots of work has taken place to transform the town into a beautiful place. Members of the newport Pagnell Partnership have been tackling overgrown and untidy areas of the town, residents and community groups have been planting flower beds, and local pubs have been creating stunning window box displays.
however, Mrs Egan believes that more needs to be done ahead of the judging on July 18: “the judges will be visiting lots of different parts of the town and we want them to be really impressed by what we have on offer. if everyone makes sure that their part of the town looks good it would help the competition judging and really benefit local people too.”
last year’s competition judges reported: “newport Pagnell is a town full of contrasts and surprises – a commendable first time entry in Britain in Bloom.”
Judging involves looking at horticultural achievement, community participation and environmental responsibility.
rhS Britain in Bloom is one of the largest and most successful horticultural campaigns in Europe, involving more than a thousand communities each year. approximately 115,000 volunteers donate an estimated 1.7 million hours of their time to the campaign.
