Olney Tennis Club
New Court opened by Mayor of Olney
Olney Tennis Club’s new floodlit court was officially opened by Michael Hughes, the Mayor of Olney on a day when the courts were packed from 9am to 5pm with players ageing from three years old through to adults. A big crowd (see photo) watched the opening ceremony.
The Mayor, who was accompanied by his wife susan, declared the court open by cutting the ribbon (see photo) and said “i am delighted to open this new court at an already very popular community club”. Club Chairman, simon barter, thanked the Mayor and the other important guests from the lTA, the lions and the Masonic Club, who with the national Hockey Foundation, had given Olney £47,000 out of the £50,000 project cost. simon said, “our club has grown a great deal in the last two years, and with this new court, we can continue to develop the club successfully so everyone can enjoy playing at Olney”.
The tennis started with the 3+ age group and continued through the ages until a Parent and Child Tournament was run with lots of entries. This was won by the Parker family (see photo). After the ceremony, the club ran its first 32 person American Tournament after a hit the tin with your serve competition won by Andrew barr. The Tournament was held in good spirits and Chris Wright and lynda baker ran out the winners against Phillipa blois-brooke and Daniel Cornwell. The prizes were handed out by Kim Durden, the owner of new Tournament sponsor, Davis Optometrists (see photo).
