As you may have heard in the news many local libraries, 400 nationwide, are being threatened with closure as part of the current austerity measures. The proposed plans for cutbacks are to take place over a 4 year period, causing many facilities uncertainty. Although a yearly reprieve has been granted, many of you have already heard of plans concerning two libraries in Milton Keynes, namely Stony Stratford and Woburn Sands which had been earmarked as part of the first wave of the council cutbacks. Their future, along with Newport Pagnell Library still remains uncertain as more cuts will follow over the next 3 years.
As residents of Newport Pagnell your support is vital, as the loss of this community grass root service will certainly have a detrimental effect on our community. The library is at the heart of the community and serves as a focal meeting point. Its open door policy means that its services are available to everyone and anyone and it is at present the only place in Newport Pagnell where you can get free internet access, essential in an age where most information now is only available online.
The facilities offered by this library are numerous and extend beyond the lending of books, DVDs and CDs.
They offer: Home Library Service; Book collections for reading; Book collections to residential homes; School visits; Story time and crafts ( in the library
and visits to playgroups); Summer Reading Scheme and summer activities; Free internet , printing and scanning; Reference/Consumer information: e.g. Ancestry , family history, driving test info, Which and other Magazines etc; Pink sacks / Battery recycling point; Photocopying, Faxing and Laminating; Exhibition space; Poster display for local and commercial events; Meeting rooms for local groups, reading groups and ACE classes; Information point for tourists etc ( accommodation guides, bus and train timetables etc), maps, leaflets etc; Newspapers,( back copies ), periodicals, magazines; Lends: Books, DVDs, music CDs, spoken word on CD and cassette, magazines, large print books, electricity monitors; Sell : work books, posters, postcards, greeting cards, bags; Business directories; Work Experience; Inter-library loans.
Even if you are not currently a library user, you should understand that you may have need of it in the future, either for information, education or purely for leisure purposes. Although there is as yet no threatened closure we would like to build a group who can come together in time of need to safeguard our Library.
So please register your support either Email to: fonpl@yahoo.co.uk
or Leave contact details with a member of staff in the library
