What do you have to lose....but weight?
Flabby Tummy? Wobbly Thighs?
The fitness field can be a very confusing place. Especially when adverts promise you a six pack if you use this gadget or do this great exercise. Over the last 10 years I have taught zillions of classes and still get people asking me the same old question... “How do I to get rid of this stomach?” or “What exercise will slim my thighs down?”. The plain and simple truth is; Sorry, you can't spot reduce, it just doesn't happen.
When you do a specific exercise for a specific part of your body, the muscles of that particular body part will develop and get stronger and firmer, but it will do nothing for getting rid of the fat in the area. Fat belongs to the whole body, and to get rid of that fat, you have to increase the calorie demand on the whole body sufficiently to use that fat as fuel.
So where do you start?
Look at your diet and ensure its balanced and healthy by eating lots of fruit and veg and including oily fish into your diet at least twice week. Cutting down on saturated fat and sugar. Try to eat less salt - no more than 6g a day. Drink plenty of water and don't skip breakfast.
Aim to be physically active for 20-30 minutes a day. The level of activity should be strenuous enough to leave you slightly breathless. Activities that you could incorporate into your exercise programme include: Brisk walking (not a normal pace - but an uncomforatbly comfortable fast pace!!), cycling, climbing stairs, dancing, or swimming.
If you find it difficult to achieve 20-30 minutes of activity a day, start at a level that you feel comfortable with (for example, 5-10 minutes of
light exercise a day) and gradually increase the duration and intensity of your activity as your fitness begins to improve. Just remember to focus on a total body fat loss solution, not just a small spot reduction one.
