HAVE YOUR SAY
Letters
Dear Editor
I am writing in response to David J Kirkbright’s letter in the October issue of the Phonebox, and I am sorry that he finds my article about Bury Field ridiculous and silly!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank him for recognising and acknowledging that there is a problem of antisocial behaviour, destruction and abuse of Bury Field. Also, I would like to thank him for being one of the many ‘Unsung Heroes’ who pick the litter up!
I beg to differ on the subject of motorbikes as during the summer months of this year, a group of young people on motorbikes were racing across the far field and causing distress to walkers and animals! The improved access is enabling more abuse of the common and has been more apparent of late!
I merely suggested the idea of a warden, (which is obviously open to public debate). As David J. Kirkbright is amongst many others who agree there are some problems – perhaps he could be one of the many ‘Silent Wardens’ who help oversee and report any abuse!
DavId J. Kirkbright points out that the paths have been laid on existing tracks, pity that the plastic on one section is slippy, wet, dangerous and barely visible at the moment! Surely this is a hazard and something else that needs to be addressed, if more people are to enjoy the beauty of the common!
One final thought to ponder over, I agree with David J. Kirkbright that Bury Field is a common and not a park, so where are paths normally created? – in Parks or on Common land?

Dear Editor
Bury Field
This is an email in response to the letter written by Mr Kirkbright - and the letter which he responded to, titled ‘The effect of changes to Bury Field’. I most certainly agree with Mr Kirkbright when his letter mentions that the anonymous writer’s suggestions are ridiculous. I particularly agree that Wardens would be a silly move. Not everywhere can be patrolled and monitored.
I am a young adult and I have camped in Bury Field on two occasions. Both evenings were great fun for myself and my friends. It was brilliant to spend a night out camping with a large (and safe) group of friends. The next day we picked up all of our rubbish and left our campsite clean and tidy. It's nice to have somewhere to go, to pitch a couple of tents, play a couple of guitars, and laugh the night away in the open. I can imagine that the older generations would have enjoyed it too when they were growing up!
With regards to the issue of litter, it would be greatly reduced if litter bins were to be put in place. I understand that regular users of the common would most likely dislike to see bins everywhere - But wouldn’t it be much better than litter all over the place?
As for the vandalism that has been mentioned - Is it fair to blame campers for vandalised trees and fences?
I would much rather be and see people outside having fun and seeing their friends in person, than sitting indoors in the same stuffy rooms, on laptops/computers spending most of their time on social networking sites.
I do feel as though young adults get accused for a lot of problems within a community. Accusations are more likely to make the problems worse and not better. I apologise if any offence is caused by camping in Bury Field.
Yours sincerely Jenny, Olney
