IT'S A BUSY TIME FOR THE OLNEY- NEWTON LINK
THE END OF the rainy season in Sierra Leone makes life a lot easier for our friends in Newton. Just as we find winter conditions difficult and we start scurrying about when Spring arrives similar activities begin to speed up in Newton. The school term is now
made to enroll students on a Computer Literacy course but they need some chairs and tables please. Thanks to eight stalwart people who walked from Olney to Sherington and back and to some other donors we are building up some funds for the furniture. This is very exciting but there's still more to do.
The Health and Clean Water Project
For some time now we have been supplying First Aid and simple medical equipment as well as a generator to the Newton clinic. We have also repaired two sets of toilets and water carriers for the local schools. We now know that the toilets at the clinic have collapsed. The local council promised to repair them but they are even more cash strapped than ours so nothing has been done. The young people at Sutcliff Baptist Church are holding a sponsored event to raise money for the clinic on November 23rd and will be very grateful for your support. As our photograph shows there is a great deal we can do to improve the facilities at this clinic. Watch this space!
Are you good at Car Boot Sales?
Over the weeks many people kindly donate articles for us to sell or use in Tombolas. We are very grateful for these items but we have a collection of items which we think will be better offered at a Car Boot Sale. Would anyone be willing to do this for us please?
And Finally!
We are now on
Facebook and we have
an up to date web-site: www.olneynewtonlink.org.uk so you can always find out more about us.
well underway and hopefully by the time you are reading this our three intrepid teachers will have visited the Newton schools and will be busy regaling friends and family back home with their stories. The next task will be to try to obtain visas for three teachers from Newton to make a visit to our schools here.
The Skills Centre
This is making excellent progress. An office has been set up to house a PC and two more are on their way. Arrangements are being
OLNEY RUGBY FOOTBALL CLUB
THE FIRST XV HAVE continued with their successful start to the 2010/11 Season, with six wins from six as this article goes to press, sitting comfortably at the top of South West 1 East league, before a local fixture at Bletchley on Saturday 16th October! (see the website for that result/report – plus all other fixtures & results www.olneyrfc.co.uk) [away win 19-20, ed!]
Though, not only are the players content with working on their performance, but to help raise funds for the Rugby Club itself and local charities. Saturday 25th September saw a Charity game for MK Snap, with the ‘one off design rugby shirts’ being purchased by the players raising £590, which was split so the Club and the Charity received £295 each. Then a further three shirts of the one off design, plus a signed Northampton Saints Shirt were auctioned
by former Harlequins/England/British Lions player Will Greenwood after the game raising a further £990 for MK Snap taking the total raised for MK Snap to £1285. Praise should be given to Olney's Captain, Chris Parnham and Player/Coach James Hawken for their organisation of this Charity Game.
Saturday 9th October saw over a hundred and thirty Former Players attend a luncheon prior to the Amersham & Chiltern league game, an afternoon enjoyed by all with another home win 26-13.
The Rugby Club always welcomes new members in both the playing and social side, with the Six Nations coming soon why not become a Social Member for only £10/season and enjoy the atmosphere in your local rugby club.
