Harrold Open Gardens 2010
Back by popular demand, the village of Harrold will be opening fourteen of its beautiful and diverse gardens to the public for charity on Sunday 27th June from 1–5pm.
Every garden, whether big or small, has its own attractions – as well as beautiful plants and trees some have livestock, others have wonderful views of the River Great Ouse and many have a wide variety of interesting features including ponds, gazebos and bridges. Plants will also be available for sale in some of the gardens which will enable visitors to take home a living souvenir of the day.
Charities benefitting
from the afternoon will
be St Peter’s Church – restoration work is needed on the tower, Harrold Youth Club which caters for 12–16 year olds and the East Anglian Air Ambulance, a very worthwhile charity which has already been called into service in the village several times in the past year.
Admission to the gardens will be by programme - Adults £3, Concessions £2 and accompanying Children free. Each programme will contain details of every garden and a trail map for visitors to follow. These will be on sale at the Butter Market at the Green on the day.
Teas and light refreshments will also be
available at both St Peter’s Church and the United Reformed Church for those wishing to have a leisurely break between gardens.
An ideal afternoon out for all the family!

COME AND DISCOVER THE SECRET GARDENS OF OLNEY
on Saturday and Sunday, 12th and 13th June!
ALTHOUGH THESE GARDENS have been open to the public for many decades, very few local people have discovered them!
Tucked away behind a prominent property in the centre of town and formerly hidden from view by a big wooden gate.
Now all is revealed, as an inner wrought iron gate tempts one to come and have a walk around these two peaceful gardens. Each one is different, one being a walled flower garden with planting introduced to this country before 1800 and the other maintained in the style of a Victorian kitchen
garden with heritage (and modern) vegetables, fruit, flowers, herbs and a bed of medicinal plants, because this garden once belonged to an eighteenth century apothecary. In it is a small unique building.
This year also vegetable varieties grown during World War II – and there is an Anderson Shelter too!
Have you guessed yet where these gardens are? Find them behind the Cowper and Newton Museum on the Market Place, Olney, open on Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th June from 10.30 am to 4.30pm for the
benefit of the National Gardens Scheme.
Admission £2.00; accompanied children free. (If you wish to visit the Museum, with its many new re-displays, there will be an additional charge.)
Relax in the tranquillity of these gardens, enjoy refreshments, purchase plants and have a chat with the gardeners.
Elizabeth Knight, Trustee in charge of the Gardens and Charles Knight, tenant of the Summer House Garden.

The event also marked the retirement of the Club Secretary, Dennis Adams, after 48 years in the post. The Chairman, Frank Lewis, paid tribute to his long service and read out a letter from Lord Denham expressing similar sentiments. Mr Jim Perkins, another life member, presented Dennis with a woodcarving of a perch by Frank Chandler, himself a lifelong angler and keen member of the Fishing Club during his lifetime. Mrs Adams was presented with an orchid by Mrs L Finn-Kelcey the Club President.
A raffle held during the evening raised £165 for Willen Hospice.
The evening was very much enjoyed by all who attended.
L-R: Bob Campion, Club Treasurer and life member, Dennis Adams the retiring Club Secretary, Derek Rogers committee and life member and Jim Perkins a life member.
