Delivering Turbine Blades to Petsoe End Wind Farm
Around mid-day on Thursday 13th May several miles of traffic jams were caused by the transportation of just one blade (of 21) destined for the Petsoe End wind farm. It managed to get ‘stuck’ at the
Landrover franchise roundabout
(Newport Pagnell / A 509 Intersection)
for about 40 minutes whilst the crew struggled to get the ‘tip’ of the blade
past the lamp post (shown left of
bottom picture) without damage.
The whole operation was handicapped by the fact that the operator controlling the steering of the rear bogie of the transporter was not in radio contact with the truck driver inside the cab some 150 feet away, which resulted in many false starts and much frantic arm waving and shouting.
Several frustrated motorists eventually ignored the traffic control operator (there were no police about) and drove UNDER the blade tip, including the small truck driver seen receding into the distance on the empty left carriageway lane, having only just cleared the blade tip by a lot fewer inches than he thought.
Yet another example of incompetent planning, both for the wind-farm in the first place (in one of the least ‘windy’ areas in the UK) and for the lack of consideration for
other road users when moving such large items around our towns and country-side on busy roads. Why was it not moved at night?
A frustrated motorist.
