Bi-centenary of Newport Pagnell’s bridges
INVITATIONS ARE BEING sent out to many schools and organisations to visit the exhibition planned to mark the 200th anniversary of Newport Pagnell's two river bridges.
Staged at the town library it will open from Tuesday to Sunday between September 7 and 27 and will show the history of the stone North Bridge and the famous Tickford Bridge, the oldest iron bridge in the Western World still carrying main road traffic.
Admission is free. Books and souvenirs will be on sale. If your group would like to be
given a conducted tour of the exhibition contact Connie Hilton, 1 Bowes Close, Newport Pagnell, MK16 OLJ (Tel 01908 616639) for more details.
The bi-centenary celebrations will be concentrated on Saturday, September 18, with a parade of "Transport through the Ages" featuring vehicles from a stagecoach to locally produced Aston Martin cars. All will be on display at Riverside Meadow where an old-fashioned fun fair is planned.
Food and drinks stalls are being arranged.
There will be demonstrations by the town's parchment works, displays of spinning and pillow lace making – and a special nursery rhyme sing-a-long by pre-school children. Admission to the Meadow is also free
Several other town organisations are also planning events that weekend. These include a flower festival at the Parish Church, bellringing, a musical concert and a shop window dressing competition. On the Saturday itself the Newport Pagnell Bowls Club will be serving light refreshments and giving bowling demonstrations.
