Olney-Newton Link
IT SURE MAKES YOU THINK!!
Someone reminded me recently that a link
is a two way process and we in Olney
can learn from our friends in Newton.
There is always a tendency to think that
we in the West know it all and the rest of
the world should follow. So here are just
one or two examples we have come across recently in our work with the Newton committee that have made us stop and think. I leave it up to you to decide who is right.
Last year we had a visit from the MP for the Newton area. He attended a meeting in the Olney Centre of a group of people gathered to discuss the future of Dickens Day. He was amazed to discover that, unlike all their meetings in their community, we did not begin with a Christian prayer and a Muslim prayer.
In January this year we sent out money donated in Olney for various projects. This goes into a bank account which can be accessed by 2 of 3 signatories but one must be Dominic Usman, the Chair of the committee and a Roman Catholic. A cheque is then handed over to the beneficiary but this has to be head to head as there is no reliable post or decent roads. Last week James Kabia, the Baptist Minister, was delighted to report that at last he had been able to meet with Dominic and receive his cheque as a local village elder,
a Muslim gentleman, had died so they were all attending his funeral.
Their houses do not have any hedges or fences round them. Some buildings,
such as police stations do have security fencing. Everyone knows
everyone else in the area – and their business.
A Visitor from Olney
We are delighted that Claire Lintern, one of the ONL trustees and her friend Sally Odgers will be
visiting Sierra Leone in April. This is a self financed visit but the purpose is to visit the Skills Centre, meet the ONL committee for further discussions, meet with medical representatives and generally establish further friendships and
contacts. If anyone has any project or idea they would like Claire and Sally to investigate please do get in touch.
Sally is an excellent photographer and they will be taking a video camera. So A Date for Your Diary please is Wednesday May 5th when Claire will be talking about their visit at our AGM. Venue to be confirmed.
