EXCITING MATCHES ON CHAMPIONSHIPS FINALS DAY
There was a record entry into the Club Championships this year and after rounds of matches throughout the summer, the Finals Day was held on a windy but dry day and enjoyed by many spectators.
In the Junior Finals, Henry Clarke beat Xavier Vale Buisson in a final tiebreak of the Boys Singles after both boys played very well. In the Girls Singles Final, Amy Hulley beat Jenny Coles. In the Boys Doubles, Ben Cross and Matthew Shacklock beat Henry Clarke and Andrew Foulkes in another exciting final tiebreak. All these Juniors showed that Olney has a strong future!
In the Senior Finals, Amy Hulley triumphed again in the Ladies Singles, beating Janet McCoubrey in a tough match and so becoming probably the youngest winner in Olney’s history. In the Mens Singles, Gavin Fowell’s power in the end was too much for the valiant Gun Chui Hwang and so Gavin won in his first season.
In the Mixed Doubles, Mike Macdonnell and Gill Hogston won yet another championship against Philip Ramos and Beryl Rook despite facing good resistance.
In the Ladies Doubles, Sarah Wilkinson and Anne Foulkes beat Lynda Baker and Anne Bacon after a good tussle and in the Mens Doubles, Gavin Fowell and Simon Barter took part in an exciting final against holders Les Folds and Mike Macdonnell which was decided in the final tiebreak with Gavin and Simon emerging the winners.
There are still two Finals to play due to injuries but well done to all the finalists and here are photos of the players on finals day.
Well done to Olney Junior title winners
Congratulations to Ben Cross and Henry Clarke who won the Dunstable Open Junior Doubles Tournament.
Well done also to our U12 team that got to the final of the MK championships. Jonno Hulley, Jack Cheal and Daniel Cornwell did
very well to get this far and were only beaten by highly ranked opposition (see photo).
