Dear Editor
In reply to Valerie Menzies’ letter in the July edition of Phonebox, I would like to say that the recent letters, including my own letter in the June edition, regarding claims made in the Liberal Democrats' newsletter Focus do not represent a concerted campaign by "obvious Tories." I am a 'traditional' labour voter, not a Tory. Regretfully, I voted Liberal Democrat at the last general election and only regretted doing so after I found that their campaign to attract tactical voters was based on blatant misrepresentations.
The problem, I think, lies in the Liberal Democrats' relative lack of ideological traditions. For all their faults, both the Conservative and Labour parties have their roots in some basic principles. Put crudely, the gist of Conservative principles might be described as encouraging high-earners and a 'trickle-down effect,' whereas Labour tends to focus on assisting those on low incomes or who find themselves in difficult economic circumstances, such as single parents. The Liberal Democrats, on the other hand, evidently try to be all things to all people, which perhaps explains their, er, 'creative' use of statistics.
Kind Regards
Paul Hutchens
