Plant of the Month Stipa gigantea
There are so many flowers to choose from during June, I thought I would highlight one of my favourite grasses which looks splendid this month. The Golden oat grass is a splendid, architectural, ornamental grass forming large clumps of narrow leaves.
Held aloft on long, stiff stalks are large, loose shimmering spikelets which persist well into winter. These give the plant a lovely see-through quality, which means it can be used near the front of a border, despite reaching 6ft tall.
This grass looks lovely when back-lit by the sun in morning or evening, and maintenance couldn’t be easier – just cut the flowering stems off in spring, and rake through the clump with hands to remove any dead leaves at the same time.
