Sherington – Swan Pub
Of equal concern to residents in Sherington has been the closure of the Swan pub and it was with great pleasure that I chaired a public meeting attended by nearly fifty residents shortly after Easter. Having been in touch with the Charles Wells Brewery we have successfully managed to get the pub back on the market and a four point action
plan was agreed at the meeting to try and ensure a successful and sustainable future for the pub. A residents survey will be distributed and I am also pleased that the Parish Council are working hard on a village plan to try to ensure that all the village amenities such as the shop and post office
remain open. They will be issuing a consultation shortly. As I write this I have just returned from the chamber where sadly Alastair Darling has just decided to increase the duty on alcohol by 2%, another blow to the campaign.
Stantonbury Spring Clean
An example to all was
the Stantonbury Spring
Clean that I took part in
and which brought
together local volunteers
from across the
community to pick up
litter in Stantonbury for
the day. I must say the
place looks much better as a result and hopefully will encourage people to keep it that way from now on. Not only very effective but great fun, every community should have one!
Africa Debate
Finally from a Westminster perspective it was a busy month principally highlighting concerns over school funding in Milton Keynes. The highlight however was my first speech from the despatch box when I was asked to wind up a historic debate on Africa in my role as the Shadow Minister for International Development. It was great to be able to tie in the work of the Olney- Newton link and excellent local NGO’s such as Advantage Africa based in Olney but an entirely different, and to be honest slightly daunting experience speaking from the box!
As ever if I can be of any assistance please do not hesitate to contact the Newport Pagnell office.
