BeatCheck
Those of us who were eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Beatcheckʼs sell-out first show at Opus last month were not disappointed.
The cityʼs only underground dance music night returned on Friday April 17 with a rip-roaring, floor shaking, speaker slamming night of hedonism.
Renowned for its easy-going crowd and full-on basslines, the night started off on top form this month with residents Gusher and Muff providing a rocking warm-up culminating in a heavyweight Kings of Leon remix, and Stewbacker and Shift finished the proceedings with a rocking set that saw the crowd begging for more.
But the highlight of the night was breakbeat supremo Soul of Man, who whipped up a dance floor frenzy with their trademark funk-breakbeat craftily mixed in with dark breaks, progressive tech house, hints of drum n bass and all thatʼs in-between. From this performance it was easy to see why they are renowned the world over for rocking clubs and festivals and for their ability to get even the most stagnant dancefloor rocking into a sweaty mass.
If you canʼt bear waiting another month for Beatcheck to return then thereʼs some good news for you. For the first time the night has teamed up with another MK promoter to bring you a one off special at Opus on Bank Holiday Sunday May 3. The Sunday Soundclash will see Dreadzone providing dub basslines upstairs while downstairs indie band The Maccabees will take to the decks thanks to alternative night Club KKBB. Dreadzone have been dance music mainstays since the early 90s, and give the scene a unique mix of dub bass, dance beats, rocking guitar and electronic soundscapes. If that doesnʼt float your boat, thereʼs always indie, nu rave and electro downstairs courtesy of KKBB DJs. And if that wasnʼt enough, Beatcheck will be back in its regular home of every third Friday of the month upstairs at Opus on May 15 when Radio 1ʼs Queen of Breaks, Annie Nightingale will hit the Check Decks.
In the words of Beatcheck, ʻcome check her beats.ʼ
