P. 46

As I write this feature the sun is shining, thereʼs hardly a cloud in the sky and it looks like we might be in for a real summer (as opposed to last years monsoon from what I hear). Well things are hotting up in the local music scene, so much so that Iʼve had to ask for another page this month - thanks Ron!
The acoustic scene has exploded into life in Olney with the ever popular Open Mic Night at the Wine Bar and the equally popular nights at The Bull. If you like competitions and popular music, then be sure to read the feature on CRMKʼs Steve Stathers. And finally having missed the re-opening, I thought it only right that I give the check head readers a dose of past and upcoming Beatcheck goodness. Thereʼs more to come in May from all the nights featured so donʼt forgot to check out their website links and support your local musicians and promoters.
THE BUZZ
Renegades of Folk
The Olney Wine Bar has been bustling with busy creative noises every other Monday for three months now and is only getting better. We really have had some great acts through the door. Recently itʼs been taken to the next level with the addition of a drum kit, supplied and played by Mr. Maccalite of the mighty Capdown, and electric and bass guitars to offer a full band set up. Alex Wesley has wasted no time in taking advantage of this situation and is rapidly making a name for himself on account of his relentless energy and slick lead skills. The Kid with Crowʼs Feet has also jumped on the band wagon, so to speak, and rumour has it that he is as edgy as he is outrageous...that crazy son of a gun. Iʼm pleased to inform you too that the Open Mic has given birth to a maniacal monthly hootenanny going by the name Renegades of Folk. The first of these will be on Saturday May 30th and will feature Dan OʼShea, Speeding Mellow and The Crying Coach, The Kid with Crowʼs Feet and The Future of Music will be headlining. I really canʼt over-sell you these nights at the Wine Bar. Anyone who doesnʼt come along just doesnʼt know what theyʼre missing. People of variegated ages are hobnobbing and enjoying fresh sounds from artists with real passion, with just a tad less touching in the pants than one would like to see. And itʼs happening right on your doorstep people. The next Open Mic nights are on the 4th and the 18th of this month and the 1st of June. So pencil those dates into your Filofax, Polly Pocket diary or Barbie calendar along with a note to self to stop being such a big girl.
