Letters Dear Editor
On reading the last few editions of the Phonebox, I can only conclude that several fondly remembered sitcom characters have selected Olney as the place they intend to while away their retirement.
I may be mistaken but, while I understand the need for discretion and anonymity, I feel sure that I recognise the much loved voices of Margot Leadbetter and Hyacinth Bucket making recent contributions to your letters page.
I also could not help but notice the great Basil Fawlty gracing various editions in the guise of a certain Mr Bacchus. I assume from his latest output we will not have to wait too long for the spectacle of him goose stepping across the Market Place while he rages impotently at a society which has long since passed him by.
It’s a shame that these clowns of the past eventually lose their power to engage us but, along with Alf Garnett and Mother-In-Law jokes, they just aren’t relevant any more.
At best these anachronistic characters only serve to bring a wry smile of embarrassed recognition as we remember what we once were and thankfully how far we’ve come.
