Olney Town Cricket Club
At the time of going to press, both Saturday teams are struggling with consistent form, and both are second from bottom in their respective leagues. Meanwhile the Sunday league continue to record success and lie third in their division. You can keep up with all the action by signing on to the Club’s website at www.olneytowncricketclub.co.uk, where all the scorecards and some amusing match reports are logged.
The Club held its annual President’s Day on 27th July 2008. This saw a Select Olney XI play a Guest XI provided by Great Horwood Cricket Club. In a hugely enjoyable day, Olney ran out convincing winners with Callum Berrill knocking off an unbeaten century. Olney will be returning the compliment by playing in Great Horwood’s 20:20 competition which will take place on Sunday 24th August.
Due to a clash of social events in Olney, the annual Presentation evening, will no longer take place on Saturday 6th September. The revised date is likely to be in mid-October, so more details of both date and venue will be in next month’s edition.
The 100 Club draw for August has yet to be made, winners will be published in next month’s edition. Anyone wishing to join the 100 Club and be included in the monthly draw for the payment of a mere £1 per week should contact David Harrison on 01234 345789 and he will send you a standing order mandate. The Pig Roast
I would like to reply to the letter from
“anonymous” lady regarding the pig
roast left behind after the 7’s
tournament. This is my personal view as someone who has spent all the weekend helping set up, run and clear up what turned out to be a great day for many people. Unfortunately, due I think to a miscommunication, the pig roast wasn’t cleared away on the Sunday.
What leaves a worst taste in the mouth than rotten pork is the fact this “anonymous” lady could have gone home and read, in her Rugby Club Membership Book, one of well over 50 contact numbers and got the problem sorted. Whilst she was doing it she could have checked out subsidised weekend tours for the kids, free coaching courses and free referees courses, in fact if she popped in the club she could have checked out the revamped clubhouse and new bar and lounge (available to hire) or she could have gone online www.olneyrfc.co.uk and not
only get the problem sorted but do the shopping as well.
Instead she chose to go home, get her camera and write a stirring letter, so “anonymous” lady in answer to “I hope we take better care of the field,” Yes we will as long as people like you aren’t involved.

Watoto Child Care Ministries, Uganda
In November 2007 Tom and Chris James from Olney spent two weeks as volunteers with the Watoto Child Care
Ministries in Uganda. This is a Christian
organisation, part of the Kampala
Pentecostal Church, which has set up
villages near Kampala for children
orphaned or abandoned, mainly as a
result of the AIDS epidemic. The
children live in family groups of eight
with a house mother who is widowed or
Foundation is organising a Charity Ball to raise funds for Watoto. This will take place at the Hilton Hotel, Kents Hill, Milton Keynes, on October 11th. For more information on the Ball go to www.comecloserfoundation.com
At the end of April 2009 a Watoto Children’s Choir will be visiting the Milton Keynes area for four days. Watoto choirs have travelled the world and in November 2007 sang at Buckingham Palace and also at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Kampala.
On Thursday 4th September Tom and Chris will be giving an illustrated talk on their visit to Uganda at Olney Baptist Church, Market Place, Olney at 8.00pm. All welcome. K
