With reference to the letter from Paul Tough, chairman of Olney Town Football Club (July issue of Phonebox Magazine): Whilst I understand the frustrations espoused and admire the civic duty of the author and others involved in the clean up operations, I have to take issue with the sweeping generalisations contained in the letter. There is no doubt that a small number of loutish individuals are responsible for the damage and complete disrespect for the facility and those tending it.
To suggest that ‘the youth of Olney and surrounding villages’ is responsible is inaccurate and unhelpful and does nothing to foster relations with the vast majority of young people who are law abiding and who do not engage in such behaviour. These statements run the risk of demonising our, and I stress our, young people who themselves are key stakeholders in what should be a joined-up problem solving approach to the issue.
I, as a parent of young people myself, agree that parents have a key role to play. I would suggest that the real solution to the problem lies in a partnership approach, involving the community and the local neighbourhood policing team, where the focus is turned on to identifying and demonising the yobs, and where young people themselves should be seen as part of the solution, not the problem.
