With the government’s Post Office closure plans stepping up a gear, and around 2,500 post offices to be shut down nationally, we find our local Weston Underwood post office under notice of closure.
A meeting was held in the Weston Underwood Village Hall recently to mount a campaign to stop this happening to this much needed local utility. The criteria used to choose which post offices would be closed was just one thing under scrutiny. Stoke Goldington post office was recently closed, something which does not seem to have been taken into account when you look at the criteria for closure of Weston Underwood. The criteria used is as follows:
• Nationally 99% of the UK population to be within three miles and 90% of the population to be within one mile of their Post Office outlet.
• 99% of the total population in deprived urban areas across the UK to be within one mile of their nearest Post Office outlet.
• 95% of the total urban population across the UK to be within one mile of their nearest Post Office outlet.
• 95% of the total rural population across the UK to be within three miles of their nearest Post Office outlet.
In addition, for each individual postcode district:
• 95% of the population of the postcode district to be within six miles of
their nearest Post Office outlet.
Presumably if you fall outside one of these categories, i.e., you are a
one percenter (you don’t have to own a Harley!) and live over three miles from a PO, your local PO should not be closed. Time to get the map out... or perhaps the Harley after all!
