We have had a lot of letters (too many to print) regarding Tesco opening in Olney this month; both for and against. The debate centres on what would happen to the town, the effect on livelihoods and the ghost town scenario; boarded up shops in other towns are pointed out. While others want more choice from a big store on the doorstep.
The same scene has happened and is still happening up and down the country and it would be interesting if anyone has a story about the arrival of the big T doing good for the local community and the local shops; not just in some extra road or zebra crossing via planning gain (sometimes called legitimate bribery) or whatever but by helping to create a stonger community with benefits to existing shops because of their arrival. We would be grateful if anyone could write to us on this one.
One other letter we received was from Kevin Viney, pointing out the loss of Great Escape from Olney, and the business it had brought to the town from those waiting for the return of it’s passengers. But what about the loss of the sight of the balloon rising, for us, from the other side of the Bull in Olney on a warm evening? Everyone stopped, looked, and enjoyed the sight; it always brought a comment from whoever was passing. I think the belief was it was part of Olney.
It all reminds one of the saying “You never know what you’ve got until it’s gone.” Perhaps we will have to wait until Tesco comes to town before we find out?
