Olney Ladies Hockey Club
Olney had a disappointing start to their season in Northants County Ladies, Division 1, conceding the first two matches to Wildcatz 8–4 (Kazza Murdoch 3 goals and Jane Gibbs – 1), then 7–1 to Daventry with Lindsey Bain scoring. Fitness with some of the mature players seemed to be the main problem, so under the watchful eye of Coach Jenny Harris, the ‘gals’ were put on a fitness plan. This was rewarded by 2 draws of 1–1 to Wellingborough and Grammarians, Kazza scoring both Olney’s goals. Another battle was lost to Kettering by 1–0, Olney fought hard but just couldn’t equalise. We then faced top of the league Towcester and held them to a 1–1 draw, Kazza scoring yet again. Our last game of the first phase was sealed with a victory over Saints, 2–1 with Wendy Haslam netting both goals for Olney.
Olney are now in 6th place with 6 points with 2 points separating 4th to 6th place.
Let’s hope Olney are able to convert the draws into wins on the return games.
Olney were very pleased to welcome Avril Soman back (she has been busy with tennis) she has slipped back into the team with ease. We also welcomed new players Amy Owen from Ravenstone and Katie Barber from Bedford and Alice Testa has made a few appearances. Catherine Woods is out of action with her knee injury, which is very disappointing for her and Olney squad. Congratulations to Ali and John Woodward on the birth of their third daughter Sarah. Kirsty Rice has reached the ripe age of 18, can’t believe she has been with us 4/5 seasons and we are due to loose her to uni next year!
Olney Tennis full of life during the winter
For more information contact: www.olneyladieshockeyclub.co.uk
Tennis is a year round activity and the club has certainly been busy through the autumn and has a busy programme through the winter too.
The teams have been in action. The B team lost a close contest against Newport Pagnell with Simon Barter, Debbie King, Katie Bennett and Gun Chui Hwang (pictured above) representing Olney.
The C team went to Winslow on a horrible evening and got blown away in more than one sense by Winslow despite great efforts by Philip Ramos, Ruth Froom, Katie Bennett and George Cheney.
However the D team did much better beating Woburn Sands with the help of strong efforts by Lynda Baker, Kay Gibbs, Ted Evans and Max Lickfold.
We are planning for 2008 already and there should be an active social programme so keep reading for details!
