Art is for all of us by Geoff Bacchus
Asociety with no art is only a menagerie of mindless beasts. Even if we cannot paint or sculpt, compose music or design fine architecture we are all open to the enjoyment of these things and to the benefit the mind gains from that enjoyment. Art gives us a lift and its appreciation stretches the mind. Without art we may as well be dead as the stones around us.
In writing of my entry to the world of photography last month I told of my frustration because lacking an artist’s skills and I know I’m not the only one in that boat. But happily there are plenty of people around who do have very real talent and if we watch the advertising we will find a steady stream of local exhibitions by local artists either in groups or sometimes just as individuals. Don’t just walk by, you may miss the chance to view, or even purchase, something unique and wonderful.
I’m not pretending that everything describing itself as art is good. In painting, in drama, music sculpture, pottery and more there is also a great deal of junk. The thing is that getting along to see or hear sharpens one’s ability to
measure the difference between the beautiful and the shoddy.
