HAVE YOUR SAY
Letters
Having read a glut of letters in September’s issue of the Phonebox recently, I stepped
outside with trepidation. I feared that in the ground, all around Olney and Emberton, legs would be dangling in the air, with their accompanying heads buried firmly in the sand.
A number of points were made in the letters section of the September issue of the Phonebox with such alarming distortion of the truth, that I wondered whether I had uprooted overnight and moved to Mars. One of the letters sent accused Mr Handford of living on another planet, I am afraid the opposite is the reality.
First, let me deal with the most dangerous argument that climate change caused by man is a myth.
The climate is influenced by life on Earth. Over the billions of years that life has existed the environment has changed. Living things absorb carbon from the atmosphere, creating oxygen in the process, and although natural bodily functions return much of this carbon to the atmosphere, when living things die, they die as a repository of carbon.
And as former living things rot, over the countless millennia they often change into coal or oil, forming mines of carbon which over the aeons served to gradually change the atmosphere and climate.
And so, when we burn these fossil fuels we are releasing the product of millions of years of development in just seconds. Every year, our species releases into the atmosphere the equivalent of a million years of carbon deposits. Do the maths, this can’t continue.
I find it truly mind boggling that there are those out there who still deny global warming is man made. The vast majority of scientists are convinced – and yet, in what seems a reaction that at best can be described as wishful thinking, people latch onto views of that tiny minority, who are not yet certain.
