New Mayor of Milton Keynes: Mike Barry
Firstly, I’d like to thank everyone for their congratulatory messages and cards of support. Indeed it is the finest honour I have received to become the first Citizen of Milton Keynes.
As the Deputy Mayor life was busier than usual but I was able to cope with the daytime job and the 60 or so events that I carried out on behalf of the Mayor were fun and enjoyable.
Now that I have been ‘promoted’ life has got very busy. The Mayor making ceremony was, for the first time this year, separated from the Annual Council meeting. This was a good idea because it enabled the visitors and distinguished guests, which included the Lord Lieutenant and the High Sheriff, time to participate in the history making ceremony and the celebrations afterwards, without having to endure the ’politics’ of the Annual Meeting.
This year is going to be tremendous fun for both of us, as my wife is joining me as the Mayoress. We are already invited to so many events and occasions and we will be visiting many areas of the City not normally open to the public.
I’ve chosen road safety as my theme this year because I feel passionate that lives could be saved and injuries could be far less serious if we all just took that little bit more care.
My charity is the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance which serves Milton Keynes. They do a fantastic job and are solely dedicated to saving lives. They have one of the fastest helicopters in the country and onboard facilities to look after and treat casualties. They are a registered charity and not funded by central government, which I think is scandalous. I am therefore pleased and privileged to give them as much support as I can.
I do hope to meet many of you over the coming year and look forward to saying hello.
Kind regards
Cllr Mike Barry, Mayor of Milton Keynes

New group says ‘yes to wind power’

Mark Handford from BREES said: “The vast majority of people in the region support the development of wind power but they don’t tend to express that feeling.

Olney Ladies Hockey Club
April saw the hockey club on their 7th annual tour to the New Forrest, staying in luxurious caravans. In order to keep the ‘gals’ in order, they went as Olney Brownies, so were under the watchful eye of Brown Owl and Tawny Owl for the weekend, aka Micaela Moroney and Jood Tetlow. The Brownies had to carry out various tasks to earn their badges, drinking, swimming, making sandcastles to name but a few. The Brownies played a fantastic game of hockey beating the opposition 6 – 1. They were rewarded for this victory with a session on Bournemouth beach. Many dancing badges were won and they entertained various other guests on the dance floor, line dancing, spinning and other wild moves with Jenny Harris performing a solo dance!
End of season: The club finished 8th in Division 1 this season avoiding relegation. Wendy Haslam was the 3rd County top goal scorer (for the second year running).
