Over 300 campainers,
15,000 suporters: a new
political force is born
'VANDALS ARE STREETS AHEAD OF POLICE'
This is what Frances Gutteridge, of Olney, Buckinghamshire, said in a recent national magazine, as she reveals why she has joined Mums' Army in the national fight against anti-social behaviour.
When Frances’ husband approached youths causing trouble at the bottom of his drive, he was pelted with cans, bottles and stones. Frances, contacted Mums’ Army. She says: “Yobs use our property as a gathering point to take drugs. My husband was trying to photograph them because the police won’t take action unless we can identify them. Fortunately he wasn’t seriously hurt, but I want to make sure there isn’t a next time.
“The vandals seem to be streets ahead of the police.”
With a register of over 15,000 supporters, according to the magazine – the biggest selling women's weekly, who launched the campaign to help their readers fight against anti-soocial behaviour - Mums' Army is Britain’s fastest-growing political party, with over 300 female and male campaigners.
Three Mums' Army candidates made impact at the ballot box on 4 May, and while they didn't manage to gain a seat, two of the women pulled in more votes than the Conservatives, which is a huge result for a political party that has been registered for only three months. Many Mums' Army campaigners are now working towards the 2007 local elections.
Mums' Army coordinator Lucy Titterington says: “People are continuing to join Mums' Army because they realise that if they don't act now then the issue of antisocial behaviour will only grow worse, in their communities and beyond. They are at their wits end and desperate for the opportunity to speak out and stand up for what they believe is important in their neighbourhood and make it a safe place to live.”
“Antisocial behaviour continues to grow and is getting worse. We accept that the government is doing something, but Mums' Army is for those people who want to make sure that it ís not just words, itís action.”
The Mums’ Army National Conference on Antisocial Behaviour is being held at the Hollies Hotel, Albert Road, Blackpool, on February 3, 2007, starting at 10am. If you wish to attend please e-mail mums.army@bauer.co.uk or call 020 7241 8319. n
