Plant of the Month HELLEBORE orientalis
Instead of early bulbs for interest during late Winter, search out the Lentern Rose to add a touch
of style and colour to your borders in February.
Helleborus orientalis is from the same family as the common buttercup (Ranunculaceae) and this helps understand their preference for moist soil. These hardy evergreen perennials are suitable for either shade or semi-shade. The saucer-shaped flowers are borne on strong upright stems and come in many variations of white, pink, purple and green. Their divided leathery leaves are evergreen reaching 25cm long.
Fortunately, you only have to look under an established plant to see how to deal with hellebore seed. Prolific self-seeders, the seed falls from the capsules around May and germinates the following winter. These self-sown seedlings produce many wonderful colour combinations rivalling the parent plants. Available at most garden centres, priced around £5. n
