Local Elections in Milton Keynes
After four years of direction and stability, Milton Keynes Council is back in a situation of no overall control following the May local elections. A number of serving councillors, including my friend and colleague Graham Mabbutt, lost their seat as a result of the highest turnout figures for many years. It seems likely that a number of people decided to make the local elections a protest vote against the government, resulting in the collapse of the Labour vote and a swing towards the Tories, with high turnouts noted across the district. In 2004 the turnout was 51.49% in Olney, rising this year to 56.09%, similar to the turnout at the General Election.
Although we were most disappointed to loose Graham, who did in fact pick up his highest vote ever. The Liberal Democrat vote was 1,589 – up from 1,369. However, as predicted national issues impacted upon people’s voting intensions. The net outcome was the loss of four hard working Liberal Democrat councillors. This is particularly sad, bearing in mind the

achievements of the Liberal Democrat administration, including the splendid Olney school campus.
My tenth anniversary as a Milton Keynes Councillor slipped by whilst we fought a hard election campaign. Those ten years have been largely enjoyable, particularly during the latter years when the Liberal Democrats took control of the council, turning it from an authority almost bankrupt of ideas and finance into a flagship authority.
During those ten years it has been a great privilege to work with Graham, who won his seat two years before me. He will certainly be a very hard act to follow, given his dedication and ability to carry out masses of casework for his constituents. Graham has announced that he intends to carry on working with the local Liberal Democrat Focus team, as he still wants to help local people.
We will, of course, be available and intend to work just as hard with both groups and individuals to support them.
Finally, may we both thank everyone for their support and hard work. It is very much appreciated. d
