Tools for self-reliance LavendonOld Peoples Welfare Committee PUT A SPRING IN YOUR STEP As part of our 'international' activities this year, we at the Rotary Club of Newport Pagnell are supporting the charity 'Tools for self-reliance'. Are holding a Millionaires Fun Evening Saturday 11th March Lavendon Village Hall 8 'til midnight Anyone interested in starting a walking group? Spring weekends, summer evenings, pub walks etc 5 -15 miles One of the primary objectives of this organisation is to support artisans in the poor communities of Africa such as Tanzania, Zambia , Uganda etc . by providing refurbished hand tools . Tools collected locally by us are delivered to the 'Camphill Community' in Milton Keynes where they are thoroughly refurbished , assembled into kits, boxed-up and despatched. This is a great project, as it not only provides obvious support for the African countries but also worthwhile employment for the Camphill Community . Rust is not a problem unless the item is severely pitted . Not required are spanners , tools with woodworm, and hard point saws that cannot be sharpened . Visitors are welcome , entry £2, or you can join the Society at half the annual subscription, i.e., £10 for the remainder of the season. They do not send garden tools but do refurbish them and sell at local events to raise funds. Our 2006/2007 season commences on 5th September 2006 with a celebration marking 21 years since the formation of the Society. We are planning to present an exhibition depicting some of our early activities , together wth personal collections from those taking part. Members , past and present, are invited to contribute with photographs and articles , or even a short talk .
